Childcare Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is for people who want to work with children from birth to 16-year-olds (and their families).  This may take place in settings or services whose main purpose is the care, learning and development of children. Workers in this area make sure children are looked after, kept active, happy and nourished. They also help children develop within the 6 areas of the Early Years Foundation Stages:

  • Language and Literacy

  • Creative Development

  • Mathematical Development

  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World Around Them

  • Personal, Social and Spiritual Development

  • Practical Skills

This apprenticeship gives people a fulfilling opportunity to work with children and young people while also gaining an understanding into the hows and whys of their development. Equally, it ensures candidates put childcare theory into practice.

As an apprentice, the exact nature of your job role will depend on your employer.  Every childcare worker MUST be DBS checked.

Possible Careers include:

  • Nursery nurses

  • After school workers

  • Nursery practitioners

  • Managers

  • Early years teachers

  • Running your own nursery

The Level 2 apprenticeship is for those working under supervision such as a nursery assistant or playgroup assistant working with children under the age of five or an assistant playworker in an out-of-school setting.

The advanced apprenticeship is a Level 3 group of qualifications and in working towards these you should have responsibilities in the area in which you work.

Students need to attend Bosco College one day a week to develop their knowledge and for portfolio workshops. A placement at a local early years setting is found for the students to gain the practical skills they need (where sometimes a permanent position is offered).

Students are allocated an assessor to give them support throughout their learning journey. The assessors will visit them in their placements to observe them performing various tasks/activities which are needed to complete these awards.
